This is one of the most common questions we hear: “I have stretch marks and I’m pregnant (or planning to get pregnant). Can I get treatment now?” The short answer is no — but the timing question is more nuanced than that, and understanding it can save you money and get you better results.

Why we don’t treat during pregnancy

Stretch mark camouflage — whether inkless or pigment-based — involves creating controlled micro-trauma to the skin. During pregnancy, your immune system, hormones, and skin are all in flux. Treating during this time introduces unnecessary risk and unpredictable healing. The same applies during breastfeeding.

This isn’t unique to us. Reputable paramedical tattoo studios, micropigmentation clinics, and even traditional tattoo shops will decline to treat pregnant or breastfeeding clients. It’s a matter of safety and ensuring the best possible outcome.

The timing issue: new stretch marks

Here’s the practical reason to wait beyond safety: pregnancy often creates new stretch marks. If we treat your existing stretch marks now and you develop new ones during pregnancy, you’d need additional treatment sessions after giving birth anyway. Waiting means we can address everything at once.

Common areas for pregnancy-related stretch marks include the stomach, hips, thighs, breasts, and buttocks. They typically start as red or purple marks and gradually fade to white or silver over several months.

When to start treatment after pregnancy

We recommend waiting at least 6 months after your stretch marks have stopped changing. If you’re breastfeeding, wait until you’ve finished. The stretch marks need to be stable — no longer growing, no longer changing color. This usually means at least 6–12 months postpartum, depending on your body.

During your free consultation, we’ll assess whether your stretch marks are ready for treatment. If they’re not quite there yet, we’ll tell you honestly and suggest when to come back.

What you can do in the meantime

While you wait, there are a few things that can help prepare your skin for eventual treatment:

  • Moisturize consistently. Keep the skin hydrated with a gentle, fragrance-free moisturizer. This won’t remove stretch marks, but it supports healthy skin function.
  • Use SPF. Sun exposure can darken the skin around stretch marks, making the contrast more visible. SPF 30+ on exposed areas helps maintain an even tone.
  • Avoid harsh treatments. Skip retinoids, aggressive chemical peels, or at-home derma rollers on the affected areas, especially during pregnancy and breastfeeding.
  • Be patient with yourself. Stretch marks are incredibly common — they affect the majority of pregnant women. They’re not something that needs fixing on a timeline.

What treatment looks like postpartum

Once you’re cleared for treatment, the process at SkinAlchemy starts with our inkless (serum-based) technique. This stimulates your skin’s own collagen and elastin production, improving texture and tone from within. Most clients need 1–3 inkless sessions, spaced 6–8 weeks apart.

If visible color contrast remains after inkless treatment, we layer custom-blended pigment camouflage matched to your exact skin tone. Many postpartum clients find that inkless alone produces significant improvement — especially on newer stretch marks that still have some natural pigment.
