Do Stretch Marks Go Away?

It is the first question everyone asks, so here is the direct answer: stretch marks do not go away on their own, but they change dramatically. A stretch mark is a scar in the dermis, the deep structural layer of your skin, formed when rapid stretching snaps collagen and elastin fibers. Like any scar, the tear is permanent. What changes is how visible it is, and that part you have real influence over.

Why your stretch marks changed color

New stretch marks are red, purple, or dark brown (dermatologists call these striae rubrae) because the fresh tear lets blood vessels show through the thinned skin. They can feel slightly raised and itchy; the itch is your skin actively repairing, not a problem. Over months to a couple of years, the marks settle into their permanent form: white or silver, slightly indented lines (striae albae). On deeper skin tones, marks often read as lighter streaks against the surrounding skin, or run darker in the early phase.

So are stretch marks permanent?

The tear is permanent; the appearance is not fixed. Untreated marks fade somewhat on their own, which is why doctors often say "wait." But fading has a floor: mature white marks stop changing on their own, and no cream reverses them. From there, the only thing that meaningfully changes their appearance is rebuilding collagen inside the mark itself, which is what needling-based treatments do. Controlled studies have measured roughly 37 to 42% improvement in mature white marks from needling alone, with results continuing to develop for months after treatment. We cover the evidence in detail in our research article.

Does it matter how old they are?

For inkless revision, no. We treat stretch marks of any age, from freshly formed red marks to white lines that are decades old. Newer marks are still actively remodeling, and older marks respond to the collagen stimulus as well; the studies above were done largely on mature marks. The only true waiting rule is pregnancy and breastfeeding, during which we do not treat.

Why are my stretch marks itchy?

Itching usually means the skin is either actively stretching (new marks forming) or actively healing. Keep the skin moisturized and resist scratching. If itching is intense, spreading, or paired with a rash, see a doctor to rule out other skin conditions.

What actually helps, honestly ranked

Time helps red marks fade toward white; hydration and steady weight help prevent new ones. Creams hydrate but do not rebuild torn dermis. Laser can improve texture with real cost and pigmentation risk on deeper tones. Needling-based treatment, done with full coverage at the right depth, is what the evidence supports for visible change in marks of any age.
