Pain is one of the biggest concerns people have before booking scar camouflage. It makes sense — the treatment involves needles on potentially sensitive areas of your body. Here’s an honest breakdown of what it actually feels like, how we manage discomfort, and what factors affect your experience.

The honest answer: mild discomfort, not pain

Most of our clients rate the discomfort at 2–5 out of 10. The most common descriptions are “scratchy,” “prickly,” or “like a light sunburn sensation.” It’s noticeable but very manageable for the large majority of people. Many clients are surprised by how much less it hurts than they expected.

For context, clients who have traditional tattoos consistently say scar camouflage is less painful. Clients who have had laser treatments often say camouflage is more comfortable. And clients with no prior experience typically say it was much easier than they imagined.

Why scar tissue often hurts less

Scar tissue frequently has reduced nerve sensitivity compared to normal skin. The same damage that created the scar also disrupted nerve endings in that area. Many clients feel less sensation on the scar itself than on the surrounding skin. This is one of the reasons scar camouflage is often more comfortable than people expect.

Stretch marks can be slightly more sensitive than surgical scars because the nerve damage is less severe, but they’re still generally well-tolerated.

How we manage comfort

Before every session, we apply medical-grade topical numbing cream to the treatment area. This sits on the skin for a sufficient time to take full effect before we begin working. The numbing significantly reduces sensation — most clients feel only light pressure and a mild scratching feeling.

During the session, we check in with you regularly and adjust our pace if needed. If any area is particularly sensitive, we can pause and apply additional numbing. Your comfort is not secondary to the procedure — we work with you, not through you.

Factors that affect pain levels

Several things influence how much you’ll feel during treatment:

Location: Some body areas are more sensitive than others. The inner thighs and ribcage tend to be more sensitive. The stomach, hips, and outer thighs are usually very tolerable. The chest area varies.

Menstrual cycle: Some clients report heightened sensitivity in the days before and during their period. If you’re concerned about discomfort, scheduling during the middle of your cycle may help.

Sleep and stress: Being well-rested and relaxed makes a noticeable difference. Clients who come in tired or stressed tend to perceive more discomfort.

Caffeine and alcohol: Both can increase sensitivity. We recommend avoiding caffeine on the day of your session and alcohol for 24 hours before.

Anti-inflammatory medications: Ibuprofen and similar medications can thin the blood and affect healing. We ask you to avoid them for 3 days before treatment. Tylenol (acetaminophen) is fine if you need something for general aches.

Inkless vs pigment: is one more painful?

They’re comparable. The inkless phase uses the same type of equipment at similar depths. Some clients find the inkless phase slightly more comfortable because the serums provide a lubricating effect. The pigment phase may feel slightly different because the pigment has a different consistency, but the overall comfort level is similar.

After the session

Once treatment is complete, the numbing wears off over 1–2 hours. The treated area will feel like a mild sunburn for the first day or two — warm, slightly tender, and sensitive to touch. This is manageable with normal daily activity. Most clients go back to work the same day.

Over the following days, the area may feel tight and dry as it heals. This is normal. Follow the aftercare instructions we provide (gentle cleansing, ointment application, avoiding friction) and the tenderness resolves quickly.

The bottom line

Scar camouflage is not a pain-free procedure, but it’s far more comfortable than most people expect. The combination of numbing cream, reduced sensation in scar tissue, and a practitioner who prioritizes your comfort makes it very manageable. The discomfort is temporary — the results last years.
